Friday

Again the weather wasn't up to much so we drove to Picton along a very windy road with views of Queen Charlotte Sound. As we arrived the sun came out and we had a lovely walk up a hill for a view of Picton. There were wild sweet peas and honeysuckle growing alongside the path and the smell of the flowers was wonderful. The town is a lot smaller and prettier than I expected - I suppose because the ferries dock here from the North Island I thought it would be busy and commercial. We had lunch in a park looking over the Sound and I handfed a duck.

Later we drove down the picturesque coastal road towards Kaikoura and stayed overnight at a freedom camp on a beach. It was extremely windy until later in the evening but it was a beautiful spot. We wandered along the beach and Martin has collected some Mother of Pearl shells and some natural sponge.
