Miyajima

Kath met us early and we caught the tram and ferry to Miyajima. When we first arrived we saw a white tailed deer in the square and took lots of photos not realising how prevalent they are on the island.

The island was beautiful especially with the cherry trees in full bloom.

Grilled oysters are an island speciality;

What a lovely beat to have;

Kath climbed the mountain - we went part way with her then returned down to have our picnic lunch. We were soon joined by hungry deer.

Later in the afternoon Kath was still up the mountain and Martin was chilling on the beach whilst I wandered through the shops. I was leaving a shop and bumped in to Jess and Ryan! They had arrived in Hiroshima earlier that morning on the night bus from Tokyo and had got straight on the tram and ferry to the island to make the most of the sunny weather.

We had a fun time sitting on the beach watching the deer - they love eating paper and a silly man had left his bags hanging up - 3 times he ran back and aimed kicks at the deer before he finally took the bags with him. The deer could smell our banana skins so came to investigate us too.

We had already made arrangements for the 5 of us to have dinner together so once back in Hiroshima we walked to one of the recommended 'food' areas which also happened to be the red light district. There were groups of 'salarymen', ties removed, roaming the streets looking to let their hair down. We ended up in a tiny restaurant which did pasta and pizza with a menu all in Japanese and no pictures! The owner/chef had very little English so we got by with google translate. Luckily no one else came in as there wouldn't have been room for them. It was all cooked from scratch.

Martin and I walked Kath back to her hostel and said goodbye - we will next see her in June in the UK when she returns from her travels.
