Iceland

Jess, Kath and Ryan finally discovered the destination of our surprise trip at Heathrow; a week in Iceland followed by a week in Aviemore; lots of excitement and questions. Jess was so excited she hugged Mr Adventure.

The day had started well with a good taxi ride up but then the flight was delayed by over an hour and a half - most of it with us onboard waiting for pushback. Comfortable plane though and we were in the exit row so extra legroom.

Another problem on arrival - no car rental rep to meet us. Turns out the business had gone under and the contracts had been taken over by another rental company. We eventually discovered where we had to go. That's a complaint to send to Holiday Autos. The car is very small as it's so expensive out here. With the 5 of us and our bags and food it's a tight squeeze.

The temperature was a bit of a shock - a very cold wind so the jumpers and coats came out of our bags.

Our first airbnb was a first floor apartment in a suburb of Reykavik. From entering it was clear that this was the owner's home with shoes on the stairs, their belongings everywhere. It was a bit weird as we felt they may come back at any minute. But the house manual was clear - use whatever food is in the house and make yourselves at home.

After a scratch dinner of pasta and some sort of salami meat we went to the harbour in Reykavik to see if we could see Robin Knox Johnston as he was due to be in but no sign of him. We then drove to a beach for a look see.

We had a good evening and slept well as the beds were very comfortable.
