The bus journey to the glacier took one and a half hours and we passed huge swathes of grassland with herds of cattle, sheep and horses and ranch houses - finally as I had imagined the Argentinean countryside to be. The red fire bush was in full bloom covering hillsides and around the glacier viewing area - hard to do it justice but photo below.
For the first time ever I will use the word.....the glacier is AWESOME. The colours are amazing - such a deep blue in the crevasses. The sounds are incredible - thunderous rumblings and loud cracks as the glacier 'calved'. It is huge - 70m cliff face of ice. We found it was easy to spend the hours we had before the return bus, wandering around the kilometers of walkways watching for icefalls and viewing it from different angles. I can honestly say it is the best natural wonder I have ever seen.
We had to be back for the bus for 15.45 as it left at 16.00. At about 15.30 we followed the exit signs along the walkway and came out to a bus drop off place.... our bus wasn't there.... the buildings weren't the same. It was a completely different area and a long walk from where we should be. There followed a fast walk then a jog then a run up and down loads of blooming steps and along seemingly endless walkways. If we missed this bus chances are we'd be really stuck. Hot and extremely bothered we got to the right place and got the bus with about 4 minutes to spare!
