The trouble with El Calafate

After we had dumped our bags at the hostel we walked into town to check out activities for when we return to El Calafate. At the National Park office we asked for a map of the treks.... no there isn't one, there are no treks you can do. But there are trails marked on the map on the wall? You have to go on an excursion to do those. Any public buses? No.

Next stop the tourist office. Same answer, to do anything you have to do an excursion. That explains why there are so many tour operators in town. We priced some but they were well out of our budget. I had read about getting a bus to see the Perito Moreno glacier but even for this you have to go with a private bus company. We returned home a bit despondent.

The next morning we did a trawl of hire car offices. Either they had no cars or their prices were extortionate. Martin suggested staying longer in El Chalten if the trekking there was good.

We walked 1 minute from our hostel to the new bus terminal in good time for our 13.00 bus to El Chalten. We had to pay 43p terminal tax each. One o'clock came, no bus. I asked at the office and she said oh the timetable changed, it's coming at 13.30. OK another learning point - must check the times of the next 3 long distance buses we have booked.
