We woke up to discover it was snowing but it soon turned to rain. Our bus to Zagreb was due at 10.45 from a small wooden 'shelter' on the main road just near to our room. It was cold and wet. 3 others turned up to wait..........and we waited and waited. There are only 3 buses to Zagreb each day and I had read that buses sometimes go straight past as they are full so it was an anxious wait. To our relief the bus eventually arrived and there were enough seats for us 5. At the next stop a young policeman was told to stand (for a 2 hour journey) to enable a tourist to sit down. The bus was now full so it sailed past the 3rd Lakes bus stop and I really felt for the tourists left there- it was a fluke we happened to use the first stop but thank goodness we did.
We got into Zagreb at 1.30 so had 5 hours before our train into Slovenia. We walked the tourist trail and saw the highlights of the city, had something to eat and then spent our remaining Kuna on food (and chocolate!).
I have to admit we nearly missed the train even though we were on the correct platform in plenty of time. A train came in which we assumed was the 18.09 and ours was due at 18.37. This train stayed for ages whilst some carriages were separated and others attached. Of course we couldn't understand the announcements but I had a sudden thought; is this our train? Well it was and luckily we got on. It was a beautiful journey whilst the daylight lasted. At the border we had our passports looked at twice and the train was thoroughly checked out.
We got into Ljubljana just after 9 and had a 15 minute walk to the hostel but we felt very safe. The hostel is new and very clean and there is free tea and coffee. The last 2 nights we haven't had a kitchen so the very first thing we did was have a cuppa!
