After a day walking a rest on the beach;
Then in a bar;
We walked along a road to get to the start of a trail and passed some wooden shacks with broken cars - a poor looking community. Turns out these are the Mapiche people indigenous to Argentina but being forced slowly but surely off the lands they claim are theirs. In the south they were forcibly removed from land bought up by Bennetton who want it for sheep to produce their wool. That's where the lad called Santiago disappeared this year during the disputes. I took a couple of photos of the settlement we saw but from a good distance.
Then further up the road was this anomaly.
There are loads of dogs running wild here. They are all owned but allowed to roam. Most seem friendly but we are always cautious. They especially come to see you if you are eating. This morning as we approached a bend in the road we heard a cacophony of ferocious barking. We both grabbed sticks but thankfully the dogs were just excited about a large group coming the other way. Talking of sticks there is a lot of bamboo growing wild. We used some as walking poles yesterday. We had a sword fight in the morning and in the afternoon the sticks got bigger.
Hopeful dog at lunch
Bamboo wars
Today (Sunday) people were voting in the mid term elections. The dominant party is right wing but there has been some speculation that this party will suffer following the discovery of Santiago's body in a river on Wednesday and the suspicion of a cover up. We will see what the news brings tomorrow. There is no alcohol served on election day.
Tomorrow we drive north on the Route of the 7 Lakes to San Martin de los Andes. Some of the route is gravel so it may take a little longer than normal as we try to go carefully with the car.
