The Citadel with the Imperial City and the Forbidden Purple City gave a fascinating insight into the history and lives of the Emporers - and it was surprising to learn that the last one was still in power in the twentieth century, abdicating in 1945. The North Vietnamese Army seized Hue in 1968 and US troops were ordered not to bomb the city in order to preserve the Citadel etc. But as the battles progressed the ban was lifted and you can still see the damage. Restoration is still in progress.
