A long hot walk back to the hotel followed during which we fantasised about cold showers and sitting down. It is hard to find a decent pavement to walk on; cars and scooters are parked up on the pavement, stalls are in the way, there is loads of rubbish, the paving is broken and uneven. When you do find a good bit watch out because scooters will use it to avoid traffic jams!
In the evening we had a chat with the hotel owner about the Cambodian pysche and economy following the atrocities in the 1970s. The hotel has rat catching cats so no more Basils here. We have noticed here more than anywhere we have stayed so far that the staff always give or receive with two hands (etiquette out here) so we try to do the same. At breakfast these 2 arrived and stood still in silence for ages with their alms bowls until one of the staff finally noticed them and gave some money.
