We took a quick trip up to Hue for a couple of nights on the train to see the Imperial City. The Reunification express travels from HCMC to Hanoi and the prettiest part of the journey is supposed to be between Danang and Hue. The 3.5 hour journey cost £2.30 each! It was fairly misty both ways but we saw some lovely isolated beaches, lots of paddy fields and some hills covered in tropical vegetation.
The train we caught on the way home left at 9am. There were plenty on board who had travelled a long way and were trying to sleep but attendants kept coming through the carriages shouting about food they had for sale; first it was yoghurts, then popcorn followed by hot sausages, next were boiled eggs (3 in a bag) then fresh fruit. Lastly, at 10.30 am was a hot meal of rice and meat.
