Siem Reap

On Wednesday afternoon we visited the Artisans Angkor project which aims to provide employment for youngsters in their rural villages. The young people are given a one year apprenticeship in a craft (silk painting, wood and stone sculpture, ceramics etc) and then return to their village. The project provides the materials and the resulting products are sold centrally. We had a guide who took us around and then to the inevitable shop. Martin spent a lot of time in the sculpture workshops. All of the girls in the silk painting workshop are deaf mutes and were taught sign language at the start of their apprenticeship.

In the evening we wondered around the night markets. We have made a conscious decision to say no thank you politely every time we are asked; "tuk, tuk?" or "massage sir, madam?" but it is a constant barrage as you walk along the streets.

We saw Basil again at dinner and in the front garden in the morning.
