After a cuppa back at home we didn't want to waste the good weather so we drove out to Cobh (formerly Queenstown) which is just south east of Cork. There is a deep harbour so it's a stop for cruise ships but I wonder how much revenue the town gets as I expect passengers are whisked off in coaches. The town is dominated by a massive cathedral;
The USP of the town seems to be based on tragedy. Much is made of the fact that it was the last port of call for the Titanic with memorial gardens and a Titanic Experience/museum. There is also a memorial and exhibition about the Lusitania which was sunk off the coast nearby. On a happier note this statue depicts Annie Moore who was one of 2.5 Irish emigrants who left Cobh after the famine bound for the US and was the first to be registered on Ellis Island.
Cobh is also very proud of Sonia Sullivan their home grown golden girl of Irish athletics.
