After a cooked breakfast we drove off along a pothole bound A road in pouring rain. Our spirits were a bit low as we had a cliff walk planned.
We passed Timoleague Abbey and just took a photo from the car as the weather was so miserable.
We sat in the car at Courtmacsherry and decided against the cliff walk so instead drove to Inchydoney beach which had been recommended. As we arrived the rain stopped and we had a short walk along the beach. It was a lovely place.
Next on our itinerary was a small town called Clonakilty - the main objective being to find a pub showing the Ireland vs Scotland Six Nations match. We wandered through the town, scouting out the pubs. We had time to spare so had a cuppa in a cafe then our sandwiches in this pleasant square. Two young people sat not far away, the chap played the guitar whilst the girl sang. Just practising, not busking.
In 1943 the town was shocked by a Flying Fortress making an emergency landing nearby. The American crew of 11 plus a monkey they had picked up from Brazil benefited from Irish hospitality for 3 days before a temporary runway was built. Just before they left the monkey died probably due to the cold. His body was laid out in state in the town's hotel and the town's residents lined the stairs and corridors queueing to pay their respects. This statue now stands outside the hotel.
We chose to watch the match in that hotel.....we obviously were the only ones not supporting Ireland but that was no problem the atmosphere was very genial.
Hotel famous for hosting the monkey;
We left before the end as it was clear Scotland was not going to help England's chances and we had just a short time to drive to our next Airbnb - a very rural farmhouse, ready to watch the England match.
As on our first night we just had a postcode and the name of the house, no road names. After calling at 2 houses we finally found the right one. I had tipped off our host Dorothy in advance about the need for access to a TV.
We were ushered straight into the kitchen/dining room and the match was turned on. Trays then appeared bearing scones fresh from the oven, home made jam and cream.
