Gap of Dunloe

In 1968 when I was 7 we had a family holiday in Ireland and my highlight was going through the Gap of Dunloe in a jaunting car as I had a ride on the horse which was tied to the rear. Today we drove out to the Gap and walked all the way up to the 'head of the gap' for the view of the Black Valley, then walked back. It was very windy and it helped that the wind was behind us on the way back. There are still jaunting cars but the old track I remember is now a tarmaced road,

Jaunting car;

It started to rain as we got back to the car and we sat in the boot of the Zafira to eat our lunch. With the rain set for the afternoon we drove some of the Ring of Kerry including up to Ladies View so called because Queen Victoria's ladies in waiting liked it so much on her visit in 1861.

In the evening we walked into town for supper. We ate in Quinlans which is a family run business with their own fishing boat, fishmongers and the fish and chip bar. I had fishcakes which were definitely home made and fresh and were absolutely delicious. Martin had a good cod and chips. The €23 bill (no drinks) was steep but it was a nice treat.
