Today we left the isles to start our journey around the NC500 on the mainland. Our next stop would be rural so we topped up our groceries and petrol whilst we could. The Co-op must have the best setting ever.
We drove across the Skye bridge thinking about the submarine which had gone aground a while back.
As the weather was good we decided to take the Bealach Na Ba pass to Applecross village. It was an amazing drive with fab views.
Applecross is a small settlement but with an active community which runs the wifi, the toilets etc. They are also trying to raise the funds to build a helipad as due to the remoteness of the village ambulances take forever to arrive. A young girl died recently of sepsis and it's thought her life could have been saved if an air ambulance had been involved.
The mobile bank had arrived.
We watched a curlew on the shore then set off for a circular walk.
These girls were selling a variety of items including jam jars with sea water and pebbles in. Credit to them as they had already raised £42 for the helipad.
Up on the hill there was an area with fitness equipment ready - what a lovely place to be put through your paces. It seems suddenly autumnal - probably because there are more trees on the mainland compared to the isles.
We treated ourselves to a proper lunch in the Applecross Inn to save having to cook later in our next Airbnb where we couldn't check in until 6pm. We drove slowly up the coast to Shieldaig stopping for a bit of beach combing and to look at highland coos walking along the road.
Arriving still a little early we sat watching the sun go down in the village.
We were greeted by Emily and Tom who both have part-time jobs as well as running an adventure business (kayaking, climbing etc) from home.
