Tuesday to Harris

First thing we checked the ferry app which had a weather  disruption warning with an update due at 9.30. We provisionally booked a hostel near the ferry terminal on North Uist just in case then set off to drive up there. On the way the update came through with the statement that a service would run at 11.00am so we went for that and they let us on using the tickets we had for the afternoon boat which may have been cancelled.

It meant we missed out on a planned walk on North Uist but best to keep our itinerary on track. The first announcement on board was that they expected some pitch and roll so I noted where the sick bags were. In fact the crossing was fine - it was slow as the route was quite a zig zag through the numerous rocks.

Once we disembarked we drove up the west coast of Harris where the full force of the weather could be seen with great waves coming in.

We continued our hour drive up to the cottage in Kyles Scarpay.

Fabulous views from the front windows but a bit musty and damp with very old fashioned furniture.  A bonus was the woodburning stove which soon warmed the place up and made it cosy. The owners have a huge ram who was very interested in us everytime we went out in case we had any food.

We walked through the hamlet and across the bridge to Scalpay in fierce winds.

Four nights with no TV or wifi meant the suduko came out as well as a jigsaw and some podcasts we had downloaded a few days before in preparation.
